Changzhou Giants make National Grand Finals!

The Changzhou Giants Rugby Club, a team consisting predominantly of players from the WAIS Staff Common Room, were in Shanghai this past weekend to take part in the final leg of the Sino 10s 2017 East Division League, with a place in the Grand Finals in June at stake.

After a superb opening day performance in Changzhou in October (Three wins from three matches) was followed by a poorer set of results in Wuhan in November (three losses from three matches), the pressure was on the Giants to deliver a strong set of results in their final set of fixtures versus the Yiwu Mustangs, Hangzhou Harlequins, and Nanjing Rockets.

In the first match versus Yiwu Mustangs, the Giants dominated from the outset, with four tries scored in quick succession, from Mr. Carbutt (3) and Mr. Rae. The Giants were able to rest some players in preparation for tougher tests to come, and ended up convincing winners.

Final Score – Giants 22-7 Yiwu Mustangs

In the next match, the Giants took on the Hangzhou Harlequins, a team they had not beaten since their creation as a club in August 2016. A phenomenal defensive effort from all the Giants limited the Harlequins to only two tries, whereas the Giants scored four opportunistic tries through Mr. Elliot, Mr. Carbutt, Mr. Gray, and Mr. Booth.

Final Score – Giants 24-10 Hangzhou Harlequins

The Giants final match, versus Jiangsu rivals Nanjing Rockets, was a tense affair, with both teams desperate for the win that would guarantee their place in the Grand Finals. A few mistakes from both sides ensued, and in the end, despite tries from Mr. Rae (2) and Mr. Carbutt (again!), neither side could be separated.

Final Score – Giants 17-17 Nanjing Rockets

A superb set of results, two wins and a draw from the Giants’ final three games ensured they finished fourth in the league table, and guaranteed their place in the Grand Finals in June.

Well done to all staff involved in the victory!
