U11 Girls Footballers End Their Season with Gritty Final Match Win!

The Under 11 Girls Football team travelled to Shanghai this week to compete in their third tournament this academic year. The team was a great mix of Grade 5 pupils competing for the final time, and Grade 3/4 girls looking to secure their positions for next year. The sun was shining and the prospect of a great day was ahead of us.

We started our day with 0-2 loss to SUIS HQ A team. The SUIS girls were a well drilled unit and moved the ball around with pace and aggression. Y. Shi and S. Sun defended well for large parts of the game, and C. Zheng kept the game alive with some great saves. SUIS found the break through with around five minutes left to play and added a second from the penalty spot a minute later. D. Ji made a dynamic substitute appearance, coming on and adding flair and aggression to the WAIS midfield. D. Huang had a loopy effort drop agonizingly close at 0-0 but WAIS were unable to find the goal.

Our final group game was against SLC. WAIS knew that a win was needed to advance to the semi-final and set up with one defender in a very attacking line up. S. Sun was entrusted with the position and proved why after making several very good clearances. D.Huang came very close when she hit the post with an effort from outside the area, but unfortunately it was an own goal that was the undoing of WAIS. Against the run of play in a desperate attempt to clear the ball, the WAIS defence scored past their own goalkeeper. Pushing for an equalizer, WAIS were punished on the counter and the game finished 0-2.

WAIS played their final game of the day to determine their final standing. Coming up against SUIS HQ B team, WAIS dominated the game from start to finish and grabbed themselves a well deserved 1-0 win. S. Sun moved to center midfield and was joined by S. Van Welden and P. Fu in a new look WAIS team. The girls combined well when P. Fu sent in a loopy cross for S. Sun to drive home for that all important opening goal. A. Gu and J. Jiang put in a solid defensive display, keeping out the SUIS attackers on multiple occasions, while J. Zhou pressed for a second goal with some brilliant attacking play. All in all, a brilliant day out for the girls and we look forward to returning in September for more Under 11 Girls Football.
