Music in WAIS Primary

This term, the music department have been inspiring our pupils to learn about music and their instruments in a way that they would not ordinarily do in their individual lessons.

Teachers have been encouraging pupils to play together as well as on their own. This has been lots of fun for our young musicians and will help them progress in their musical knowledge and performance abilities.

Throughout the term, there have ensembles (groups) of musical classmates performing together in Primary assemblies, as well as many solo performances.

On top of existing music lessons, Thursday afternoons’ Music Performance ECA gives primary musicians time to play in string, woodwind, recorder and percussion ensembles. In guitar, besides ensembles, pupils play chords by playing an exciting game with flash cards. In piano a new piece will be chosen each week, giving pupils the chance to explore piano repertoire beyond their ABRSM pieces. Recorder and brass groups, new workshops that started this year, began in October.

All pupils at WAIS are encouraged to take up an instrument at school, and it really is a fantastic addition to a child’s life, and when they get older and progress into secondary school, playing music to a high level can make a real difference on university applications in leading universities around the world.
