3M have started an exciting new project all about WHALES. We have been reading literature featuring whales, including 'This Morning I Met a Whale,' by Michael Morpurgo and 'The Big Blue Whale,' by Nichola Davies. We have discovered all kinds of fascinating information about these huge mammals. We have been recording facts about whales, formulated these into questions and subsequently written to David Attenborough (a famous natural historian from England who presents television programs about animals and the planet) for answers to some of our trickier questions about whales. Whilst writing to Mr. Attenborough, we learnt all about formal letter writing because we do not want him to be disappointed by our letter writing skills: we want him to be impressed by our writing and erudite questioning!
Very excitingly, we have been listening to whale-song. This is music-like noises that the whales make to communicate with each other. The noises can carry for hundreds of miles through the oceans and are very strange and beautiful. We spent time trying to imagine what the whales might be saying to each other. There were some creative and interesting ideas about this!h, we learnt all about formal letter writing because we do not want him to be disappointed by our letter writing skills: we want him to be impressed by our writing and erudite questioning!
3M are full of enthusiasm for this project. They cannot wait to find out what we are planning to do next and have already produced some truly fabulous work which we hope to be able to share with the whole school when completed.
