2022 March - Football Match Report

A balmy Friday afternoon on the WAS Changzhou playing field was the setting for the first home inter-school football match for over a year.

LiHe arrived at school, with 20 students decked out in their striking red and black kits. It would be fair to say that our boys were surprised to see the size of some of their U11s, which at first filled some of our players with trepidation.

But after a brief warm-up under the lowering sun, the two captains met at the centre of the pitch for the toss. LiHe won the toss and elected to kick off.

WASCZ, in their bright blue and white striped shirts and blue shorts, found themselves on the back foot immediately, with some confident and dynamic runs coming from all angles from LiHe. But the WASCZ defensive line of Captain A. Yang and A. Chen held strong and made sure that the Wycombe dam could not be breached.

Slowly but surely, the WASCZ boys clawed their way back into the game, firstly with some excellent challenges across the park, but also with some sumptuous passing. L. Egervari showed amazing courage in midfield against some extremely tall 11 year-olds, whilst F. Figura and R. Shaikh orchestrated some momentum with some very accurate passing into the final third.

As the last first-half minutes ticked away, it was WASCZ who produced the most threatening phase of the half, when R. Shaikh skillfully broke away from the last man and was only thwarted by some top-class goalkeeping.

Score: WASCZ 0 VS LiHe 0

After a five minute interval of a team-talk and water intake, the players made their way back onto the pitch. Over the first half, the stands had filled up nicely with home students and staff, who had come to enjoy this rare spectacle of a sports fixture, now under floodlights.

And the second half did not disappoint at all. From the whistle, the pace was quicker, the challenges were stronger, and the skills from both teams were more accomplished. In fact, the WASCZ boys had the clear advantage in the opening period of the second half, with J. Quintuna finding the measure of his opposing defender on the left wing, and deftly linking up with attacker W. Yu creating a handful of goal-threatening chances.

In fact, the WASCZ boys had the clear advantage in the opening period of the second half, with J. But after a patch of pressure from LiHe, and some resolute defending, goalkeeper A. Cao was suddenly and cruelly beaten by a vicious deflection which span past him at rocket speed, leaving him with no chance of a save and hitting the net.

Score: WASCZ 0 VS LiHe 1

The WASCZ players responded magnificently to this turn of fortune. They stayed calm, they passed the ball superbly and they were soon back on the front foot, threading the ball into the LiHe danger area and having several efforts on goal. And eventually the persistence paid off, when W. Yu suddenly found two metres of space from a high ball from midfield and darted into the LiHe box and lashed the ball past the keeper into the roof of the net in front of the home crowd.

Score: WASCZ 1 VS LiHe 1

With eight minutes remaining on the clock, the game was finely balanced and could have gone either way. Both teams threatened goal, and both teams produced excellent saves from the goalkeepers. A. Cao, WASCZ goalie in an all-orange strip, produced a fabulous performance with some razor-sharp reaction saves, especially towards the end of the match.

With no more than three minutes on the clock, LiHe moved into the final third and their centre-forward looped an inch perfect shot towards the top left corner of the WASCZ goal. A. Cao made a heroic dive with his right glove coming within millimetres of the ball, but it continued towards goal and dipped under the bar to find the top corner.

Score: WASCZ 1 VS LiHe 2

It was an excellent goal which summed up an excellent game of football. WASCZ fought on bravely to the final whistle but there was just not enough time on the clock. A. Hou and A. Gu made an immediate impact when they came on as substitutes.

The whole team can be proud of their performances and can take so many positives from this thrilling match. Well done WASCZ !
