Wikipedia states that ‘Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an educational simulation and/or academic activity in which pupils can learn about diplomacy international relations, and the United Nations. MUN involves and teaches participants speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.’ However, MUN is much more than that, MUN inspires pupils to think globally, to posit themselves as citizens of the world and to become passionately involved in world events which cannot occur in the same way within the classroom.
From the 2nd-4th November 2018, nine intrepid WAIS pupils took part in the NYUSHMUNC 2018 conference. This took place at NYU Shanghai. Our delegates representing, Cuba Norway and South Korea took part in challenging debates including Cybercrime, The Underrepresentation of women in Senior positions and The Humanitarian Crisis of the Rohingya Genocide. The commissions were placed in were General Assembly, Economic and Social Committee as well as Human Rights.
A Model United Nations conference can be daunting at the best of times, but our pupils have only been doing MUN for a few weeks and this coupled with the fact that many delegations were comprised of University pupils made for a potentially frightening experience.
