On 14th December 2018, WAIS hosted the fourth annual House Unison Competition in the Theatre. The competition again exceeded all expectations as the whole of the Secondary school competed against each other in a musical extravaganza. Each of the eleven houses presented two songs from Disney films, one as an entire house unison song, the other a part song with selected members of the house. The event mirrors top British Boarding schools in their commitment to musical excellence, widespread participation in music and in working together in houses to build a close, devoted community of learners as every house was guided by a member of the Music Department, as well as Housemasters and tutors.
The event began with last year’s winner of the boy’s houses, Scott House. Throughout the competition, pupils sang, danced, played instruments, and showed their gymnastic talents to as enthusiastic crowd of their peers. Pupils announcers presented the songs and were introduced by our resident compere, Mr Pattison. The morning was full of exuberant singing, excited cheers, and colourful costumes.
The competition reached its culmination with Dove house, last year’s overall winner and winner of the girl’s houses. While the adjudicators, Mr Griffiths and Dr Wu, tallied up the totals, the entire school sang “We’re All in this Together,” from High School Musical complete with a dance troupe guided by Mrs Ford. The pupils were relaxed and happy as this song signaled the end of a busy term and successful Unison Competition.
House Unison was the culmination of months of hard work by pupils, their tutors, music staff and their housemasters. During this time, pupils learnt to work in teams for a shared purpose as well as expressing themselves creatively. All pupils can consider themselves to have succeeded in producing performances that were a credit to themselves and their house, however the results were as follows:
Winners: Austen House
Boys Winners: Newton House
The House Unison Competition is an important event for pupils to work as a team and bond as a house. Each year, the bar is raised and the showings from each house get stronger and stronger. We are very proud of the pupils and look forward to next year’s competition.
