ABRSM Examiner and Senior Moderator, Mr Euros Evans, visited WAIS from 26th to 27th November to examine 33 practical candidates. It was the third time WAIS hosted ABRSM practical exams and the results continue to reflect the exceptional strength of our instrumental programme. Mr Evans was most impressed by how thorough our candidates were prepared in all components of the practical exams - three pieces, scales and arpeggios, sight reading and aural skills. Below are some key facts for the Nov practical exams:
1. 100% pass rate with 85% Merit (120-129/150 marks) and Distinction (>130/150 marks) Awards - This stunning result is 15% higher than our remarkable 2018 April results and more than four times higher than the global average. WAIS’s cohort average for the Nov practical exams is 125/150 marks.
2. All three Grade 8 candidates achieved 100% Distinction and Merit awards: Distinction - Violinist J. Zhou (Year 9, Newton), and Merit - Pianists M. Li and W. Lin (Year 13, Blake). Both M. Li and W. Lin have included ABRSM piano as an integral part of their university applications and, by achieving Grade 8 with Merit, have secured 24 additional UCAS points to attend the university of their choice. J. Zhou has collected 30 UCAS points before he commences his GCSE study. J. Zhou is now preparing for his ARSM diploma exam and will perform in Manchester in late February.
3. The highest score for this exam cohort is 135/150 marks - many congratulations to J. Zhou and L. Wang (Year 8, Austen, Grade 1 Piano).
This is the strongest set of ABRSM results WAIS has ever produced. Well done one and all!
