During the Golden Week holidays, three members of WASCZ and indeed the Changzhou Giants rugby team took the opportunity to travel to Tokyo in Japan to join the twenty best rugby playing teams in the world. The holiday came at the perfect time to allow them to travel to the first Rugby World Cup to be held in Asia. Mr. Jacobs (Head of Primary), Mr. Wood (Deputy Head of Primary) and Mr. Thurgood (Head of Rugby) had a busy four days in Japan where they enjoyed watching South Africa versus Italy in Shizuoka, where there was some excellent rugby on show, as one of the tournament favourites South Africa ran in seven tries to win 49 – 3.

Watching rugby and eating delicious Japanese food was a highlight of the trip, especially with their visit to the fish market where they made the most of the fresh sushi. However, not only did they watch rugby but they were also selected to play in the inaugural Yangtze Delta Blues versus Mitsubishi RFC match in a prestigious stadium next to the Tokyo Stadium, which was hosting the England versus Argentina match later that same day. The Yangtze Delta Blues started incredibly well and used their tremendous power to break through the Mitsubishi defence. It was Mr. Thurgood who showed some individual flair as he went through to score his first of two tries. The final score was 56-14.
