Wycombe Abbey School Staff Football team advanced to the Semi-Finals of the Changzhou International Cup with a 5-3 win over Jiangsu Midlanders on Sunday.
Wycombe Staff scored early from a penalty kick after music teacher B. Lu was tripped in the Midlanders penalty area. B. Wood (Deputy Head-Pastoral) stepped up tucking the ball calmly in the bottom right hand corner. C. Young (Primary) followed up with another goal to give Wycombe a 2-0 lead.
Midlanders fought back bravely to 2-2 with Wycombe Goalkeeper R. de Bos (Senior Housemaster) forced to make a number of fantastic saves and repeatedly put his body on the line for the team.
Captain T. Pattison’s (Head of Secondary) inspired substitution removing himself for J. Fearon (Business Development) and Fearon’s subsequent well-taken goal started a rout. A stunning 25 yard thunderbolt from M. Lawton (PE) and a brave finish from P. Grey (Primary) saw Wycombe take an unassailable 5-2 lead.
A consolation goal from the Midlanders ended the hard-fought game with a season opening win for Wycombe.
The team will hope they can reach the final in their game next week. Updates to follow!
