Cross Country Report – Boston International School Wuxi – Saturday 16th October 2021

On a very wet and windy Saturday morning 14 athletes and two members of Wycombe Abbey staff travelled to Boston International school at Wuxi, with the arrival of new uniform all members of the team were proud to showcase their new running jackets and vests which looked fantastic.

The first race was all Year 9 students both girls and boys ran together, although results were separate for each. Justin Yang got off to a flying start just sitting behind the leading two front runners from Dulwich college Suzhou and Boston International school. Justin battled hard and only two seconds separated 1st to 3rd. It was a great race from Justin who showed his gutsy determination. John Akordor was closely behind Justin in 4th Place with a time of 11 minutes 12 seconds for the 3km course.

Victor Wan from Scott House ran a superb race for his first debut appearance for the Wycombe Abbey running club. Victor finished 11th just out the top ten, followed closely by Matthew Ma 13th also from Scott House. Lewis Zhou ran cautiously in his first race for the school finishing in 14th position. Sam Xu who prefers the shorter sprint distances, paced himself well around the wet course which was a mixture of road, grass and track. Sam finished in a time of 14 minutes 23 seconds. This was a great effort, as running anything over 100m for a sprinter is a long way!

Kevin Wang was the final year 9 boy to complete the 2-lap course and still managed to finish within the top 20 runners, finishing 19th in a time of 15.59. This was a great performance from Kevin who unfortunately was in some discomfort with chest pain, although was ever determined to complete the race.

The girls race also started at a rapid pace with 3 girls from Suzhou Singapore International School, Dulwich College School and Nanwai Kings College School taking the lead. In the mix was the two Sisters Lucy Wu and Judy Zhu from Fonteyn House. The girls worked hard encouraging each other on, as they always do on training nights. The girls worked hard but were not quite strong enough to catch the leading girl.

Vivian Wu who is ever improving ran a good race and completed the course in a time of 14 minutes 58 seconds. Vivian finished 10th

Before the start of the next race which was Year 10 to 13 (High School) the rain was starting to come down quite heavily which caused a slight delay in the start. The course was starting to get very wet and slippery in parts. After a quick brief and team tactics, the race was ready to start.

Perry Pan Hawking House, started at a steady pace tracking the leader who was steaming ahead. Perry used his racing head wisely and started to pull back some ground from the leading runner. Perry continued to press on gaining more ground on the front runner. During the last lap of the 3 - lap course, an athlete from Suzhou Singapore International School just managed to get in front of Perry to take second place. This was an excellent run from Perry with a finishing time of 15.53 for the 4.5km course.

Sam Zhou, Newton House, ran a very solid race getting stronger and faster each lap. Sam finished a creditable 8th place and given another lap may have finished within the top 4 runners. Alvin Wu who has just returned back from an ankle injury showed his talent by finishing in 13th position with a time of 18 minutes 6 seconds. The Elgar boy has missed some training recently due to his injury, so this was a very good race for him.

The final boy to come in was Harry Ha from Scott House, who again prefers the shorter sprint distances. Harry paced himself around the 4.5km course and managed to put an explosive sprint finish at the end of the race. Harry finished in 21st position which was a good effort for his first appearance and has only been running for a few weeks.

After a quick change of clothes and warmth in the Boston International School cafeteria. The top five finishers from each race were awarded a medal.

This was a great day out and a very promising start to the cross- country season. In four- weeks we will be hosting our own cross -country race. The children will be much more confident in their abilities, so please praise and continue to support all children in which is a very enjoyable sport.  Finally, a big thank you to Mr. Welfoot who helped support and take photos of the team in action.
