Nature gives children an extensive classroom with inexhaustible curriculum resources. Winter offers many hidden outdoor secrets to stimulate children’s desire to explore.
Bathed in the warm sun, WAS Kindergarten children started their farm activity for a wonderful day of exploration and fun.
Explore the Secrets of Herbs and Ancient Chinese Medicine
Since ancient Chinese herbalist Shennong tasted hundreds of herbs, the ability of flowers and plants to cure sickness has become common knowledge in China. During this trip, WASCZ kindergarten children explored the relationship between plants, medicinal materials and people’s lives, deepening their understanding of traditional Chinese medicine and culture. In the farm’s pharmacy, the children explored learning activities, preparing Chinese herbal medicines by processing and grinding different herbs and then putting the resulting medicinal powder into beautiful bags.
Making and Eating Dumplings
KG1&KG2 Children learned to make dumplings with the help of their teachers. They added fillings to a sheet of dumpling skin, then shaped and moulded the mixture into pretty dumplings. We then cooked the dumplings, allowing the children to taste the delicious treat they made together.
Making Tofu
The KG3 children participated in a tofu–making workshop, helping them understand the process and the labour that goes into making it, plus an awareness of its nutritional value and the taste of various foods made from it.
As soon as they entered the workshop, the children began to discuss: Is tofu made of soybeans? When soybean milk is ground, how does it come out? What kinds of dishes can tofu be made into? The children’s discussion showed that they were very interested in the appearance of tofu and how it transforms from a natural material to its finished product.
Meet the animals
After the tour, we visited a Pet Park, where the children encountered many animals, learning to handle these tame but independent-minded animals respectfully, gently and hygienically.
These activities exercised each child’s ability and creativity and cultivated cooperative ability, letting them experience the fun of making delicious food by hand. We will continue introducing these activities, enhancing independence and life skills. We are looking forward to our next fun Kindergarten outing.
