Grade 8 Enrichment Camp: A Pathway to the Duke of Edinburgh International Award

Grade 8 Enrichment Camp took place last March 25-29 at Caoshan, paving the way for the Grade 8 students in their pursuit of the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh International Award. This camp was meticulously crafted to serve as a pathway towards the Award, providing students with a rich array of experiences tailored to its requirements.

Designed as an introductory session to the Duke of Edinburgh International Award, the Enrichment Camp activities were structured around the Award’s key sections: Service, Skills, Physical Recreation, Adventurous Journey, and Residential Project. Each activity was carefully selected and meticulously planned to align with the Award’s objectives, offering students a taste of what they can expect on their journey towards achieving this esteemed recognition.

Highlights of the Enrichment Camp included:

Community Service

Volunteering

Students engaged in meaningful service projects aimed at making a positive impact in their local community through a trail building effort initiated by our local partners. Students helped in clearing debris and added steps to help prevent erosion in a hiking trail that local people use as part of their livelihood. Students learned the value of giving back and making a difference in the lives of others.

Kayaking

Skills Development

The beautiful Yixing Tuanjiu Scenic Area provided the setting for our Grade 8’s kayak training. Students learned basic paddling skills through interactive sessions and kayak games and explored the local waterways through their newfound skill of kayaking. These experiences not only expanded their skill sets but also boosted their confidence and self-esteem.

Hiking

Physical Recreation

Students participated in a range of physical activities designed to promote health and wellness, from hiking, cycling to various team initiatives. Encouraging an active lifestyle, these activities fostered physical fitness, resilience, and a sense of achievement.

Camping

Adventurous Journey

A highlight of the camp was the adventurous journey component, where students embarked on an exhilarating outdoor expedition, navigating rugged terrain, and overcoming obstacles together as a team. This immersive experience challenged students both physically and mentally, fostering resilience, teamwork, and leadership skills.

Residential Project

Teamwork and Cooperation

Throughout the camp, students lived and worked together in a residential setting, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. Through shared experiences and collaborative efforts, they built lasting friendships and learned the value of teamwork and cooperation.

Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh International Award offers students a wealth of personal and social benefits. Beyond the acquisition of new skills and experiences, students develop essential life skills such as leadership, communication, and problem-solving. They also gain a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence as they work towards and achieve their goals.

Moreover, the Award encourages students to step out of their comfort zones, explore new opportunities, and make meaningful contributions to their communities, fostering personal growth and social responsibility.

As students return home from the Enrichment Camp, they carry with them not only unforgettable memories but also a newfound sense of purpose and determination to embark on their Duke of Edinburgh International Award journey.
