‘It’s often the small steps, not the giant leaps, that bring the most lasting change’ (Elizabeth II). On Friday 9th December, Wycombe Abbey’s chess team performed again, coming 18th out 60 teams in the recent International Schools Online Chess Tournament. The damp, cold, wet evening contrasted strongly with the determination of the players to play. Each one showing selfless commitment, fortitude and determination to represent our school despite challenging circumstances surrounding the recent covid outbreak an ever present concern for what was occurring with friends.
The students, stuck to their task with determination and skill, performing to a high and consistent standard despite circumstances. A drop in performance was experienced this time round due to fewer players taking part. Sterling performances though were seen from D Li (15 wins), M Zhang (12 wins), B Zhang (11 wins), H Li (8 wins), H Ha (8 wins), C Xiang (4 wins) and M Zhang (2 wins).
The combination of defensive and attacking skill as well as spectacular levels of concentration is what sets our team apart from the competition. The team remains confident for their next match and remain keen to produce a stronger performance in the future.
