At the close of the last academic year, WASCZ students from Grades 1 to 12 united for a meaningful and impactful recycling campaign. This collective effort resulted in the collection of an impressive 1.7 tons of paper, which was sold to a local recycling center. The proceeds were donated to charity, turning waste into a force for good, benefiting both the environment and our community.
The initiative went beyond merely collecting paper; it also fostered education and active participation. Our STEM Summer School students conducted an experiment where they transformed used paper into new, blank sheets. At the end-of-camp science fair, these students proudly exhibited their recycled creations, giving them a chance to share their innovative work with their parents. The positive feedback and enthusiasm from families highlighted the importance of integrating environmental projects into our educational curriculum.
In addition to the environmental and educational aspects, the recycling drive sparked friendly competition between schoolhouses. Each house competed to contribute the most to the campaign, and the top five houses finished within just 10% of each other, creating a nail-biting finish! In the end, Dove House narrowly claimed victory, becoming the only house to surpass the 200kg milestone. WAS founder, Dame Frances Dove, would undoubtedly be proud of the students for cultivating a spirit of community and responsibility.
In recognition of their achievement, Dove House will be awarded a special certificate crafted from the recycled paper made by our STEM Camp students. This unique certificate will feature natural inks derived from flowers, also created by the students, symbolizing not only their accomplishment but also the values of sustainability and creativity that we emphasize at WASCZ.
The success of the recycling initiative was made possible by the collective effort of our students and staff. Their dedication to making a difference and their enthusiasm for environmental stewardship are truly commendable. Special thanks go to our boarding staff, whose guidance and encouragement made this all possible, and to our science technicians, Ms. S. Zhang and Ms W Zheng, who not only prepared all the equipment needed for the recycling and ink experiments, but also weighed each house’s contribution box by box!
This initiative has not only contributed to a greener planet but also showcased the power of community and collaboration. As we embark on a new academic year, we carry forward the spirit of this successful campaign, a reminder of the positive impact we can achieve when we work together towards a shared goal. Here’s to another year of striving for excellence and making a lasting difference!
