This past weekend, the stage was set, the lights were dazzling, and the music soared as Wycombe Abbey School proudly presented the WAS Pops Concert 2025—the most ambitious and successful edition of this beloved annual tradition to date!
What began four years ago as a small house competition—created to give students outside the music program a chance to shine—has evolved into one of the most anticipated events on the school calendar. This year, it reached an exciting new milestone, bringing together a combined force of 74 students and around 20 teachers from our Changzhou and Hangzhou campuses in a celebration of talent, collaboration, and creativity.
From the moment the first note rang out in the stunning open-air arena at Citizen’s Square, Changzhou, audiences were captivated by the energy and professionalism of our Pops Orchestra, Choir, and soloists.
Performers delivered an unforgettable program of pop classics, musical theatre hits, and orchestral showpieces that had audiences clapping, cheering, and even singing along.
As Mr Ward-Roden, Director of Performing Arts at WASCZ, shared, “When you have a huge audience that’s cheering you on and enjoying the music, it gives a real sense of excitement and for the students a real sense of satisfaction and achievement.” The energy, confidence, and joy shown by every student on stage were a testament to their hard work and the dedication of our performing arts team here at WASCZ.
But beyond the music, what made this year’s Pops Concerts so memorable was a spirit of collaboration. The joint effort between the Changzhou and Hangzhou campuses created a unique opportunity for students and staff to work together, build friendships, and share in the magic of performance on a truly professional scale.
At Wycombe Abbey, music education is not only about developing technical skills—it is a powerful force that shapes character and ignites passion. Each year, a diverse range of musical performances offers every student a stage to express themselves. As they perform under the spotlight, students gain far more than applause—they build confidence, resilience, and teamwork through real-world experience. Through cross-cultural artistic exchange, they also nurture aesthetic appreciation and personal artistic growth. When education is set to music, every student can find their own voice—and let the power of the arts light the way to their future.
