The anticipation and hard work have finally paid off as the eagerly awaited IGCSE results have arrived, unveiling an impressive display of achievements for both students and teachers at WASCZ. This momentous occasion serves as a testament to the school’s firm commitment to excellence and the tireless efforts invested by our dedicated staff and determined students.
This year saw another record-breaking number of exams sat by WASCZ students, coming in at just under a thousand. As in previous years, the most common grade for WASCZ students is an A**, making up approximately a fifth of all results. The prestigious A** grade is only awarded to the top 5% of examinees across the world, showing that WASCZ students continue to be comfortably among the top achievers both nationally and internationally.
STEM Subjects: A Resounding Success
In addition, a record number of students at WASCZ undertook the Further Pure Mathematics exam this year. This challenging subject not only provides students with a solid foundation for A Level Mathematics but also gives a strong boost to their university applications. With multiple students achieving an A**, it is clear that WASCZ students are well on their way to the world’s top universities.
Language-Based Subjects: Unlocking Unlimited Potential
English Literature, also widely regarded as a challenging subject, saw 100% of students who took the subject passed successfully, with nearly 70% of students achieving A** to B grades. This outstanding achievement demonstrates WASCZ students’ ability to analyse complex texts and effectively convey their thoughts, skills which will serve them greatly at university.
Mr John Higgs, Deputy Headmaster (Academic) and Exams Officer, commented, “The consistent high performance of our students in this year’s exams is testament to the school’s unwavering focus on academic excellence. With the British Media widely reporting on this year’s exams returning to pre-Covid levels, it instills great pride to see WASCZ students continue to succeed and promises a bright future both for the school and its students.”
Student Interviews: Stories of Triumph and Resilience
Jenny and Lucy both transferred to WASCZ when they were in G5 and both a member in Dove House. Remarkably, they were ready to sit the IGCSE Maths exam in G9, both achieving impressive A** grades despite sitting the exam a year early. Now, in their fifth year of growth at WASCZ, they have both excelled in the IGCSE examinations.
In her 9 IGCSE exams, Jenny achieved an A* in Further Mathematics and an A in Art. She received A** grades in all other subjects, including Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, English Language, English Literature, Physics, and Chinese. Her outstanding performance places her rightfully among the top 5% globally. When she received her results, she jumped up in excitement.
On the day of her English Language exam, she was diagnosed with COVID-19. Despite being ill, she completed the exam. Due to her test-taking condition and the stringent grading of this year’s IGCSE exams, she felt nervous until the results were announced.
Determined to study psychology in the future, she spent a meaningful summer as an intern at a psychological counseling studio in Shanghai.
Lucy achieved an A* in Further Mathematics, Geography, and English Literature, as well as an A in Photography. She also received A** grades in all other subjects, including Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, English Language, Art, and Chinese. Notably, she managed to complete her studies in Mathematics, Geography, and Photography within just one year. Rather than seeking external tutoring or excessive practice, Lucy’s approach to learning is straightforward yet effective—she asks her teachers whenever she encounters difficulties, ensuring quick resolutions. “Intervention is very useful, and sometimes I can ask questions when the teachers are on duty at the school,” she says.
Dedicating time to piano practice daily and persistently studying even on weekends, she has spent each of the past five years in a fulfilling manner. “The school’s schedule is already quite packed for me, so as long as I complete what the school assigns, that’s good enough,” she remarks. A student with a well-rounded development in humanities, sciences, arts, and music, she dreams of studying Illustration at the University of Edinburgh in the future. “Because it’s a comprehensive university, I can choose other interesting courses besides Illustration,” she eagerly states.
IGCSEs stand as a vital stepping stone in the academic journey, preparing students for the challenges ahead in their A Level studies. These qualifications are not only critical for university applications but also equip students with essential skills and knowledge necessary for their future endeavors. These excellent results come just one week after WASCZ students in Grades 11 & 12 received news of their great achievements at A Level and the outstanding university offers they accepted as a result, including from institutions such as The University of Cambridge, The University of Oxford, and Imperial College London, to name just a few.
Mr Fielden, Assistant Headmaster (Extension), who has seen the students through their IGCSE journey as the Head of Grades 9 & 10, commented: “At WASCZ, we firmly believe that true excellence lies not only in academic achievements but also in the character, resilience, and compassion our students demonstrate. These outstanding results are a reflection of their dedication, the precious support of our parents, and the tireless efforts of our exceptional teachers. I extend my heartfelt congratulations and thanks to all for their invaluable contributions.”
We are humbled by the support and trust shown by our parents, who have partnered with us in their child’s educational journey. The mother of L. Zhang shared her feelings: “Education isn’t about right or wrong; it’s about suitability. She has had a positive outlook on life since she was young, so I feel relatively at ease having her stay in the boarding school. Nanjing is also quite close, within our controllable range. I’ve always had a more laid-back attitude towards her academic performance, focusing more on her overall well-being. Because nobody is perfect, as long as she does her best in her studies, there will be no regrets. She’s free to arrange her own learning path.”
Congratulations once again to all our students on their fantastic grades!
