Last week, Miss Vornicu and Mr Williams accompanied Drama and Music students on an exciting trip to Shanghai to see the British touring production of Singin’ in the Rain. The production has come directly from the West End in London and has toured China for three months, wowing audiences in Beijing, Chongqing, Chengdu and now Shanghai.
Singin’ in the Rain Directed by Jonathan Church, this stage adaptation of the 1952 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer classic has delighted audiences worldwide since its 2012 premiere. Frequently voted one of the most beloved film musicals of all time, the production has earned four nominations at the Laurence Olivier Awards and received widespread critical acclaim.
Set in 1920s Hollywood during the dramatic transition from silent films to “talkies”, the musical tells the enchanting love story of Don Lockwood and Kathy Selden, capturing both the glamour and chaos of the golden age of cinema.
WASCZ students enjoyed a faithful recreation of the film’s cherished songs, including Good Morning, Moses Supposes, and the iconic Singin’ in the Rain. A standout feature of the production is its extraordinary rain scene, created using a 6,000-litre recycled water system that allows performers to dance joyfully in a cascade of real falling water; an incredible theatrical spectacle that left the audience amazed.
After the performance, Mr Williams introduced our students to the show’s stage manager, Harrison Brodie, a former student of Mr Williams from the UK. The group was then treated to a rare backstage tour, where they explored the impressive set and gained insight into the technical wizardry behind the special effects. This unique opportunity offered students a valuable glimpse behind the curtain of a professional touring production.
Performing Arts students and staff returned to school tired but thoroughly inspired after witnessing such a spectacular stage performance — an unforgettable experience for all involved.
