If there were no night, would we cherish the light quite so deeply?
If there were no failure, would we truly understand growth?
If there were no differences, how would we come to understand ourselves and the world around us?
In June, WASCZ proudly hosted its very first TEDx WAS Changzhou Youth event under the theme of “Contrast”. With around 100 audience members in attendance, the event was filled with ideas, inspiration, and the energy of young minds coming together.
Student-Led, From Vision to Reality
This event was far more than a performance — it was a truly student-driven endeavour. During their ECA (Extracurricular Activity) time, students took full ownership of every aspect of the event. They independently chose the theme “Contrast”, designed the posters and brochures, reached out to and invited all speakers, and coordinated the entire programme from start to finish. Their dedication, creativity, and leadership were nothing short of remarkable.
TEDxTalks Highlights
Six inspiring TEDx talks were delivered across the afternoon, featuring our Principal, teachers, and students — each offering a unique lens through which to explore the theme of Contrast.
01.What We Only See in Contrast
— Mr Matthew Jamieson
WASCZ Executive Headmaster
Opening the talks, this thought-provoking speech reminded us that just as light only becomes visible against darkness, we often only truly understand and appreciate things when placed beside their opposites.
“I think we understand health more clearly because we’ve known fragility. We understand courage more honestly because we’ve known fear, and we understand love more fully because we’ve known absence. Contrast sharpens our thought. But for human beings, it does more than just that. For me, most of all, it sharpens our gratitude.”
02.The Balance of the Board
— J. Tee | Grade 9
Using the chessboard as a metaphor, this talk examined the balance between strategy and instinct, reason and emotion — and what that means for the choices we make in life.
“The moon gives meaning to the sun. Winter gives meaning to spring. Silence gives meaning to music. And mortality gives meaning to life. Because if life lasted forever, moments would lose their urgency. Love would lose its weight. Time would lose its value. The beauty of existence comes from the fact that it cannot last. And maybe that is why stars only appear at night.”
03.Between Past, Present, and Future
— Y. Woo | Grade 9
A deeply personal talk exploring the contrast between who she was and who she is becoming, drawing on her experiences growing up between different cultures.
“Your past, your present, and your future—they are all connected through contrast. Who you were shows you how far you’ve come. Who you are shows you where you stand. Who you will be depends on what you do next. Stop fearing the gap in your life. That gap— between where you are and where you want to be— that is not failure. That is potential. Because the person you are becoming…is created in the contrasts you choose to face. Don’t avoid the contrast That’s where your growth is.”
04.Tomorrow
— J. Gao | Grade 7
Contrasting the challenges of today with the hopes we carry for tomorrow, this talk was a powerful reminder to keep moving forward with courage and belief.
“So instead of endlessly waiting for the ‘perfect version’ of yourself in tomorrow— Why not begin today? Maybe there are obstacles. But that is exactly why we need to learn how to overcome them, and discover who we truly are. To stop turning ‘tomorrow’ into some unreachable future. And to start from today. Because the thing that truly changes your life was never tomorrow. It is today.”
05.Simplicity and Luxury
— R. Shaikh | Grade 9
A thought-provoking exploration of the contrast between a simple life and material luxury — and which one truly brings lasting happiness and fulfilment.
“We can chase temporary luxury, or embrace the quiet beauty of simplicity. The choice is always ours to make. Real wealth is found in moments, relationships and inner peace money can’t buy. No amount of luxury can ever replace that……May you always find joy in enough.”
06.How We See the World Through Contrast
— Ms Fanny Fang
WASCZ Chinese Principal
Ms Fang closed the talks with an inspiring perspective on how contrasts between Eastern and Western educational philosophies, when embraced, lead to deeper understanding and growth.
“We should use contrast to better understand the world, while also learning to reflect inwardly and recalibrate ourselves whenever we lose balance, rebuilding our inner sense of order. When we develop this ability, every contrast ceases to be a source of anxiety and instead becomes an opportunity for growth. Each day then holds the possibility of becoming a better version of ourselves. Look outward to understand the world; look inward to understand yourself.”
Beyond the talks, Dance Teacher Ms Zuo joined students F. Peng, J. Wei and K. Lin in presenting captivating piano and dance performances. Through a different artistic language, they offered their own interpretation of the theme of “Contrast”, where movement and stillness complemented one another, enriching the audience’s aesthetic experience.
We are incredibly proud of every speaker, performer, organiser, and volunteer who made this event a reality. It is the students’ dedication, creativity, and courage — nurtured through their ECA time — that transformed this from a dream into an unforgettable afternoon.
This is only the beginning. We cannot wait to see where the next TEDx journey will take us!
