All around the World in Kindergarten!

Our most recent topic has been “All around the world” and as part of our International Week celebrations, the children have learnt about the different countries our teachers are from and what how different or similar these are in comparison to China.

Immersing into Unique Experiences and Traditions

Our first stop in this journey was to Scotland, where the children learnt about iconic places and traditions, such as the kilt – a garment resembling a knee-length skirt of woollen pleated tartan cloth, traditionally worn by men as part of Scottish Highland dress. They also heard the meaning of the colours of the tartan and how Scottish people proudly sport kilts as a tribute to their heritage across the globe.

Hands on Experience

Our next adventure took the children to Portugal, where we began by learning where this small country is located by looking at the world map and what the national flag looks like. We learnt about traditional foods, famous landmarks and how the architecture of such places differs from what we can see in Changzhou. Their favourite part was learning the traditional folk dance called “Rancho”. The children learnt some of the simple steps, twirls and turns of this particular dance. By immersing themselves in this activity, the children were able to learn through a different experience and understand how different traditions exist around the world. As future global citizens, it is important that our children have an open mind and value other cultures as much as their own.

Landmark Tour around KG

Our last stop was to England, where the children learnt about the different landmarks they can find in London. After listening to a few facts about this country, the children embarked on an imaginary trip where they visited each landmark discussing its characteristics, what they liked or disliked about them and shared if they had ever visited the country.

Cross Curricular Learning

As we were learning about other countries, the children also developed their imaginative skills while playing in our travel agents role play area. They enjoyed discussing what other countries they would like to visit by looking on the map, completing the booking forms and making lists of all the things, that they would need to bring when visiting their chosen destination. The children also had access to postcards from places all over the world and they enjoyed writing to their families about the things they could see during their imaginary visits.

Through exploring the multicultural community, we cultivate children to be curious about people around them, and to see and understand similarities and differences. In this way children will be curious and respectful about others and become a positive member of a diverse world. The more experiences our children have thinking about the community the world around them, more they are able to understand theit own community and make a contribution to opening the minds of others.
