Coffee & Info Session：Global Perspectives
With over two decades of extensive teaching experience, Ms Hany has held significant roles as a Head and in senior leadership positions in various countries, including the UK. Her husband is currently serving as the Head of English and a Grade 4 Form Tutor in Lower School and her son is currently a Grade 9 student at WASCZ. As a result, she possesses a unique understanding of the challenges and rewards that students may encounter throughout their educational journey.
Dr Silverwood, our school Headmaster, was on the origional development committe for the Global Respectives come in Cambridge 20 years ago and has introduced it in a variety of forms into the school he has worked in since 2005.
The Coffee & Info Session is just around the corner, scheduled for Friday, 17th May. Ms. Hany extends a warm invitation to all parents to join her for a cup of coffee and an insightful discussion on global perspectives.
The Global Perspectives curriculum resembles a broader education approach, encompassing a range of interdisciplinary subjects including geography, history, economics, philosophy, linguistics, anthropology, sociology, environmental science and more. Unlike the in-depth A Level courses, it serves as an additional enrichment beyond the traditional learning journey—a bonus, if you will. It instills in students the skills of regular reflection, critical thinking, and the ability to synthesize information, fostering an open-minded attitude by encouraging students to consider diverse personal, local and global perspectives on the same issue.
From the fundamental question of “Who am I?” to understanding “How the world operates,” the WASCZ Global Perspectives curriculum team has meticulously selected seven major themes. Each academic year, students across all grades engage in synchronised, progressively challenging learning experiences, gradually expanding their breadth of knowledge in a spiral fashion.
Different grade levels will revisit each theme, with teachers integrating more challenging tasks into the learning process.
Take “Self and Place” for example: elementary students will initially grasp the concept of family, using their understanding of it as a starting point, then extending their comprehension to include peers, communities, and the city they reside in, gradually broadening their exploration. Moving up to middle school, students will begin understanding the diverse sizes and lifestyles of families worldwide, perhaps comparing family structures in New Zealand with those in South America. Finally, high schoolers will delve into a wider array of connections between individuals and groups, considering the concept “the family”differs in a different cultures caves and impacts on identity of forced migration.
Another example is found in the theme “Responsibility and Rights.” Younger students will focus on excelling in school, while as they advance through grades, they’ll delve into legal systems, children’s and adolescents’ rights, policy formulation, and the disparities between developed and developing nations.
At WASCZ, our goal is to stimulate students’ curiosity and thirst for knowledge through a thoughtfully crafted curriculum and a wide array of activities. We encourage them to explore boldly, think critically, and confront challenges with confidence. Our hope is that they will maintain their “presence” and “identity” as they mature, embracing the diverse world with excellence and a pioneering spirit, thereby contributing to a more peaceful, just, and sustainable global community.
We envision the Coffee & Info Session as not only an information hub but also a platform for fostering warm community connections. Through collaborative efforts between home and school, we aim to provide strong support for our children’s futures.
