Debate in Global Perspecitves
What is Global Perspectives without research, collaboration, evaluation and communication? Engaging in debate helps students develop such skills.
For the past few weeks in Global Perspectives, students have been learning about Finance & Poverty. The knowledge the students acquired in this chapter would help them make informed financial decisions in the future. Students were then asked a question; “Would you rather rent or buy?” There were different opinions in the room which were supported with valid arguments. Students then had to work in groups to consider both sides of the debate (affirmative and negative). It was wonderful to see them engage in thoughtful discussions and learn from one another.
Debate equips students with valuable skills that will serve them well in the future. These skills go beyond the class as they are important for success in the modern world, where effective communication and critical thinking are highly valued. Here are a few of the skills that are developed in debate.
