The Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations date back more than 2,000 years all the way to the Zhou Dynasty. It is best known as “the moon festival” held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar; on this day it is believed that the moon is at its brightest and fullest size, which symbolises the light that leads people’s path to reunion and good fortune, hence being one of the most important holidays of Chinese culture.
This holiday is based on the legend of Chang’e, the moon goddess in Chinese mythology and what better way to bring this story to life than to create a drama with teachers.
To help our children deepen their appreciation and understanding of Chinese culture, we started this wonderful activity by all children and teachers dressed in Chinese Han costumes, and each class enjoyed reading books about Mid-Autumn Festival. Classes then explored our incredible engaging garden, in which children played traditional games and won prizes, created tie dye art wear, smashed rice cakes, and enjoyed some mooncakes.
Our festival activities also inspired our children with gratitude and kindness. This included a ‘Mooncake’ sale. Children purchased mooncakes to share the happiness with their own family, extending our community. The total amount reached was an astonishing 4,434 RMB; letting us know also how kind and giving are the hearts of our children, their willingness to extend a helping hand and to create a hope and opportunity for others is one of our main aims in our Kindergarten.
This fantastic day would not be complete without a lovely picnic surrounded by nature near the school lake. Needless to say, each child arrived excited about the wonderful adventure of their day and returned home full of gifts, joy and stories to share with their families.
