At WASCZ, we have already welcomed two cohorts of outstanding international scholars from the UK. Joining the WAS student body, they have journeyed from unfamiliarity to familiarity, witnessing sparks of inspiration born from the collision of distinct cultures. Here, they have not only nourished their academic pursuits but also honed their skills and characters through the fusion and exchange of diverse ideas. They have emerged as a group of exceptional young scholars, well-versed in and appreciative of Chinese culture, with a strong sense of global citizenship and a deep understanding of cultural diversity.
The Excellence Academic Journey
These outstanding international scholars have blossomed while choosing their ideal universities in their drive for academic excellence. Some aspire to enter the world’s top universities such as Oxford, Cambridge and Stanford, while others aspire to achieve excellence in diverse fields such as Biology, Chemistry, Business and Law. They are not just laying the foundation for their future in WASCZ, but also achieving remarkable personal growth and moving forward step by step towards their respective goals, inspiring others with their dedication and achievements.
R. Ursu – “The study of law is a path destined to be difficult.”
R. Ursu is currently in Year 12 and her EPQ project is on ‘Differences between the legal systems of developed and underdeveloped countries’. Her internship at a ‘shelter’ temporary home for the needy allowed her to experience first-hand how the law can provide a vital refuge for vulnerable people who are suffering from injustice. This made her determined to pursue the difficult academic path of studying law.
Travelling thousands of miles to refine her academic study at WASCZ was the perfect opportunity for her. The interdisciplinary competitions and diverse sports programmes here have also made her more confident and committed, qualities that are helping her on her path to becoming a lawyer. Ms Ursu commented how her academic journey has been supported by her teachers, saying:
“Mr Fosu has given me a lot of advice on studying law and submitting university applications, telling me that if you think you can do it, then you should do it.”
Backed by Mr Fosu’s advice and encouragement, she gained confidence, leading to an interview with the Faculty of Law at the University of Cambridge. We look forward to seeing her knocking on the door of this top university in the future.
R. Kaliuta – “Hobbies and academics are not in conflict”
R. Kaliuta, currently in Year 11, has already set his sights on a business career. Whether as a businessman or a future entrepreneur, he actively draws on all the resources available at WASCZ as he maps out his academic path. As a basketball and rugby team member and someone who also enjoys scuba diving, he has also never stopped thinking about his passion for sports.
His passion for his academic and extracurricular pursuits is evident, both in his role as the CEO in the ASIA Business Simulation competition in October and his exploration of the intersection between sports and economics in his EPQ project
‘How Sports Teams Can Contribute to Economic Development,’ which explores how hobbies and academics can be combined.
His enthusiasm and dedication are inspiring, and he is clearly on the path to great success.
The Wide Stage of Art
Art is an expression that crosses the boundaries of languages and countries and is the most direct and profound bridge between different cultures. From music and dance to theatre and painting, WASCZ provides a broad stage for these international scholars to display their talents and ideas, expanding cross-cultural awareness and building emotional connections.
K. Pike – “I love to stand on stage and make people happy.”
K. Pike, a Grade 12 student, aims to join WASCZ’s percussion and orchestra, collaborate with singers and pianists, and produce her own music album. In addition to her drum set, she is learning to play the bongos, timpani and xylophone. She also occasionally uses egg shaker instruments during her free time.
She explores various music genres, from metal and rock to jazz and world music. “Without coming here, I wouldn’t have had the chance to study at one of the world’s top schools,” said K. Pike. “The music department is amazing and has let me take a more experimental approach to music.”
C. Ajibola- ”It took me two weeks to learn the Chinese songs, but… [the audience] loved it!”
C. Ajibola, an aspiring aerospace engineer, plans to form her own musical band in addition to her pursuits in mathematics and physics. During WAS’s rendition of ’The Big Band’, she demonstrated her confidence on stage while holding the microphone. “It took me two weeks to learn the Chinese songs, but it really encouraged me when I received a great round of applause from the audience; they loved it!” she remarked. As an active member of the WASCZ school band, she participates in various school band competitions. For her, these events serve to unwind from academic responsibilities, engage in singing, and appreciate the local culture.
Struggle and collaboration in multi-sport
The comprehensive sports programme and the multicultural nature of WASCZ help break down language and cultural barriers. Through activities such as coordinated teamwork on the football field, strategic play in basketball games, synchronised rowing, and focused determination in fencing, students from various backgrounds collaborate and develop meaningful connections.
“Most of the skills I have developed during my time in Changzhou are thanks to sports,” says C. Poulton, a rowing team member. Alongside M. Slotema, another international scholar from the UK, and their team, they participated in early morning rowing training at 5 am. Their efforts culminated in competing at the Henley Royal Regatta, where they experienced the power of cooperation and mutual trust.
After engaging in sports such as badminton, tennis, basketball, volleyball, and fencing, R. Ursu founded the first girls’ basketball team at WASCZ with her friends.
“We have many upcoming basketball competitions for the girls’ team, which provides an opportunity to showcase our potential,” she expresses. This initiative represents a significant achievement in her athletic development and reflects the strong connection she has established with WASCZ.
Cross-Cultural Enrichment Journey
“I simply had to experience China myself to learn more about the culture, the people, and the language, and I think it’s been wonderful,” said one of our international scholars, making a similar comment as many make when they first arrive. Outside of the classroom, we are committed to expanding the horizons of our students, and our enrichment activities are an essential part of their growth, as well as providing opportunities for outstanding international scholars to learn about and immerse themselves in Chinese culture and to gain a profound experience that goes beyond academics.
During the Enrichment Camp experience trip, participants have enhanced their physical strength and willpower through outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and high ropes. They are fostering a spirit of solidarity and dedication in trail-building and community service while immersing themselves in various regions’ local customs, history, and culture. This journey represents a genuine cross-border and cross-cultural experience that broadens horizons and supports personal growth.
A Friendship of the Heart is a Long-lasting Relationship
This campus brings exceptional students from diverse countries together, and individuals share their unique backgrounds and personal experiences across borders, cultures, and languages. The full boarding system facilitates the rapid integration of international scholars, fostering deep friendships and mutual respect as they support one another.
“My roommates are so sweet and thoughtful. We’re always sharing very funny and crazy stories about our days, and I always have a great time with them.” –L. Aboueldahab
“Now I can try to others in Mandarin in my lessons, it’s cool. And it gives me an idea of how different students learn.” –M. Slotema
“I am trying to improve my Chinese, and they are always willing to help me with any questions I have. I will have so many lifelong friends from here. It’s just been amazing.” –R. Kaliuta
“My classmates here are all incredibly intelligent. They understand the content of subjects and help me learn. Their opinions and different methods help me become better.” –C. Poulton
In the multicultural environment of WASCZ, students’ growth is akin to a symphony, harmoniously blending diverse notes. Through academic achievements, athletic refinement, and experiential learning, they not only advance in knowledge and skills but also grow in character and emotional depth. We anticipate that all WASCZ students will bring this cross-cultural insight and perspective to face challenges, empowering them to establish themselves internationally and move towards a distinguished future filled with opportunities and challenges.
