An In-depth Cultural Experience of China
——I. Smith
My name is Ivan Smith. I am one of approximately 40 scholars enrolled in the Wycombe Abbey International scholarship programme, and I am currently studying for my A-levels at Wycombe Abbey School Changzhou. I would first and foremost like to express my profound gratitude to HJ Colston-Inge, Theresa Booth, Jonathan Barry, David Fosu, and all the other staff from Engage with China, Wycombe Abbey School, and BE Education who have helped me with this exceptional opportunity. This educational journey has transformed me in ways I could never have imagined, and I am deeply appreciative of the experiences and knowledge it has brought into my life.
From Year 7 onwards in my education, I have always been interested in all aspects of China, from its language to its culture and its increasing role in making critical global decisions, such as the response to climate change. Having enrolled in the Mandarin Excellence Programme, I learned Chinese for five years, including three under the GCSE curriculum, and graduated with the belief that I would study my A-levels at the same school in the UK. However, about a week into the summer holiday, I was forwarded an email by my Chinese teacher, and, to my shock, it was a scholarship offer to study in Changzhou. I decided I would apply, even if I thought it was unlikely that I would be accepted, and to my surprise, I managed to pass through all the hurdles to attend the programme. A new life awaited me in a country I was already keen to explore.
Upon arriving in China, I was impressed to see the quality of the facilities, not only in the school itself but also in the whole city of Changzhou. This has meant that I have not only had access to high-quality facilities during my education but also to a unique experience of many locations across China in several affordable and enriching holidays, strengthening the cultural experience I and the other scholars have been able to enjoy. One important aspect of the school is the extent, quality, and variety of the sports facilities, enabling me to train in any sport I wish, including basketball, rowing, weightlifting, swimming, and badminton. The facilities are well air-conditioned and are the best sports environment one could ask for. Because of these facilities and the balanced, healthy meals provided by the school’s canteen, I have lost over 30 kilos since my arrival in September 2023.
The school trips are remarkable, providing one of the most in-depth cultural experiences of China one could ask for. From enrichment camps that emphasize outdoor skills and holistic education to paid holidays in key cities such as Beijing, Nanjing, and Shanghai, I have enjoyed exploring many aspects of Chinese society. This includes life in farmland and mountains, as well as the narrow streets of night markets in the inner cities. These experiences have not only deepened my understanding of the Chinese language and culture but also fostered my personal growth. Through exchanges with the locals, exploration of different cuisines within China, and a deep view of Chinese history through visiting many museums, I have grown as an individual. Most importantly, I study alongside a vast majority of Chinese students, with whom I have been able to discuss life experiences, cultural differences, academics, and plans for the future. These exchanges have been very beneficial and have helped me become who I am today. I am very grateful to the school for allowing me to experience China in a way I otherwise could not have imagined. I am also thankful to the Chinese people for their unending hospitality and the experiences they have shared with me. 谢谢你们!
Every year, the Wycombe Abbey International China Scholarship Programme selects approximately 10 scholars to study at its campuses in WASCZ. These scholars benefit from an international curriculum seamlessly integrated with rich experiences of Chinese culture. They engage in meaningful interactions with local students, fostering cross-cultural understanding and growth. This unique platform allows Chinese and international students to learn from one another, make shared progress, and develop a deeper global perspective.
