This month in Kindergarten, our theme, “All About Me”, has given us a wonderful opportunity for children to explore who they are, their families and what makes each of us special. Across K1, K2 and K3, our pupils are engaging in age-appropriate activities to learn more about themselves, their physical bodies, their feelings and the importance of friendship.
In K1, children have been exploring the school environment and learning about classroom expectations. They are discovering more about themselves and their physical bodies, identifying parts of the body and recognising their own emotions. This helps them build a strong foundation for understanding themselves and others, while learning how to be a good friend.
In K2, the focus has been on families. Children have been sharing stories about their family members, learning about different family structures, and even creating their own family trees. These activities help them appreciate the uniqueness of their own families and respect the differences in others.
In K3, children are learning about their senses, sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell, through hands-on exploration. This knowledge helps them understand their own experiences and the world around them, while also fostering curiosity and empathy toward others.
One of the most exciting moments this month was Odd Socks Day, a perfect fit for our theme. The children arrived at school with beaming smiles, proudly displaying their brightest, most colourful and mismatched socks. Some had stripes, others had spots, and some even had characters with 3D fluffy ears or rainbows. The laughter and excitement in the classrooms and playgrounds were striking, a demonstration of how much our pupils relished expressing their individuality. Just like our socks, no two people are the same, and that is something we all celebrate.
Through Odd Socks Day, our pupils learned that being different is what makes us unique. We are all special in our own way, whether it’s how we look, the talents we have, the languages we speak at home, the food we eat with our families, or the hobbies we enjoy. At WASCZ, we encourage children to feel proud of who they are while also respecting and valuing the differences in others. Celebrating Odd Socks Day during our All About Me unit helped children connect the idea that our individuality makes our community more colourful and exciting.
As the children continue to learn about themselves, their families, and their senses, they also develop confidence, kindness, and respect – qualities that are incredibly important for their growth both inside and outside the classroom. Odd Socks Day was a joyful reminder of the importance of celebrating our differences.
