All the teachers and children of WASCZ KG wish you a Happy New Year and a Joyful Lantern Festival! May the festive spirit and joy of the Lantern Festival fill your hearts and homes.
The Lantern Festival, also known as Shangyuan Festival, Xiaozhengyue, or Yuanxi, is one of China’s traditional festivals. It represents reunion, joy, and aspirations for a better life, shining like a bright pearl in China’s historic traditional culture.
At WASCZ KG, teachers carefully planned a series of exciting activities to allow children to experience the charm of traditional culture, immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere, and develop a strong sense of identity and pride in their cultural heritage.
Under the guidance of teachers, children eagerly rolled “yuanxiao”, glutinous rice balls, by themselves, lighting up their faces with confidence and focus. Although the yuanxiao they made varied in size and shape, the experience helped develop their fine motor skills and boosted their self-confidence. The children then enjoyed eating the delicious treat which they had prepared themselves.
Paper-cutting quickly became one of the children’s favourite activities. The tiny scissors transformed sheets of paper into various creative shapes, each a unique expression of the children’s imagination and creativity. This traditional art not only refined their fine motor skills but also inspired a sense of appreciation for the children’s budding artistic talents.
Children’s joy was vividly expressed with cartoon characters, fairy wings, and cute animal faces painted on their cheeks. Each face-painting experience sparked their imagination and creativity.
This traditional folk art continues to thrive as children chose their favourite designs and tried making sugar paintings themselves. Children traced patterns using liquid sugar pens. This hands-on experience helped them appreciate the beauty of cultural heritage.
“Bingtang Hulu”, or candied hawthorn, is one of China’s most beloved traditional snacks. To celebrate this treat, teachers guided children through the entire process—boiling syrup, skewering fruits, and coating them in sweet sugar glaze. The children completed every step themselves, making it even more enjoyable!
The New Year’s festive celebration wouldn’t be complete without red envelopes! After crafting their own envelopes, the children carefully placed golden “coins” inside. This symbolic gesture of prosperity and happiness set the tone for a lucky and thriving year ahead.
