When music controls the flickering of flames, when glitter automatically arranges itself into beautiful geometric shapes, when fire rises from the palm of a hand, and when scientific puzzles are locked in a “mystery room”…
Students from Grade 6 to 9 at WASCZ have brought us a truly imaginative science exhibition. From human biology to astronomy, from chemical reactions to engineering design, the students have brought their self-conceived, repeatedly tested, and refined STEM projects to the event. These projects blend creative interdisciplinary thinking, showcasing their unique scientific visions.
Interdisciplinary Practices Breaking Knowledge Boundaries
At this year’s science exhibition, the most striking highlight is undoubtedly the students’ bold interdisciplinary ideas.
In one project, students injected methane into a Rubens tube and used an amplifier to adjust the music’s frequency and amplitude. As the sound waves vibrated, the flames danced along with the rhythm. When dynamic music played, the flames on the Rubens tube transformed into “dancers,” leaving everyone present in awe. “Both music and physics are my hobbies, and I feel I’ve made great progress in both areas,” shared the student who designed this project.
Another group of students combined biology and physics, cleverly using the acidic properties of potatoes, lemons, oranges, and apples to create simple batteries that successfully powered light bulbs. Through multiple failures and adjustments, they gained a deeper understanding of the scientific principles behind electrical currents, conductors, and chemical reactions.
One of the standout projects was a “vacuum science escape room,” designed and built by the students themselves. Participants had to answer six STEM-related questions within two minutes to “escape.” Meanwhile, some students dressed as “astronaut NPCs” provided hints or suddenly popped up to offer surprises. “We thought this design would be more interactive, helping the audience engage more quickly and deepening their understanding of what they’ve learned,” said the student behind this project. This demonstrated their skills in knowledge transfer, logical thinking, and engineering design.
These ingenious “cross-disciplinary” projects have shattered the boundaries of knowledge and shown how students at WASCZ autonomously apply multi-disciplinary knowledge to solve complex problems in real-world situations.
Diverse Exploration: Growth Beyond Science
Walking through the exhibition, one can’t help but be amazed at the various ways the students expressed science:
Hands immersed in dish soap foam to create “flames on the palm,” a stunning visual effect that left everyone in awe.
Building models of human cells and organs with paper and clay.
Using scalpels to dissect an octopus, exploring biological structures through real specimens.
Creating sensors through circuits and programming to precisely control a small car.
Making a mini eclipse and lunar eclipse simulation with a flashlight and globe, bringing astronomy to life before their eyes…
“They spent weeks preparing these projects, conducting research, experimenting, and finally presenting their data. It really took a lot of effort,” remarked Mr. Fielden, Assistant Head of Extension at WASCZ. ” They worked together as a team, and the results are truly impressive.” Behind these results is not only the students’ passion for learning, but also their deep reflection on how to make knowledge understandable. To ensure the experiments were rigorous and the principles accurate, many students independently learned advanced concepts. Their learning is not constrained by their grade level but driven by the questions themselves. This self-motivation is precisely the quality WASCZ values most in its students.
This science exhibition is not just about scientific knowledge; it’s about the development of skills behind learning—project design and execution cultivate creativity, exhibition and presentation hone communication skills, and cross-age teamwork nurtures leadership and collaboration. At WASCZ, we foster students’ ability to explore independently, think critically, and innovate openly through a comprehensive STEM curriculum, extensive extracurricular activities, research projects, and global competitions. We believe these growth experiences outside the classroom will accompany them throughout their lives.
Science is a never-ending romantic exploration. As flames dance in sound waves, electricity flows through fruit, and scientific puzzles are unraveled in the escape room… Students at WASCZ are showing us that education can be so vibrant.
