Flying the Nest to Pursue My Dreams in China
——P. Sullivan
My experience as a British Scholar in China has been life-changing. I have achieved so much in the short time since arriving in this wonderful country, and have enriched my life more than I ever imagined.
Stepping off the plane at Pudong Airport, I was greeted by the muggy heat, a stark contrast from the chilly British weather. But more than the weather, I could feel a sense of adventure and the promise of a new frontier in my life, a feeling that still resonates with me.
If you had told me last year, or even six months ago, that I would be living in a boarding school in Changzhou on an Academic Scholarship, drinking Bubble Milk tea on the weekends and travelling across Chinese provinces on holidays, I probably would have laughed. Even now, I am still amazed at where I am, who I am with, the possibilities and the new and fantastic opportunities that come to life every day I am here.
Whilst it was difficult to get used to living away from my family for the first time, I am so glad I decided to ‘fly the nest’ and pursue a higher level of academic and cultural proficiency in WASCZ.
The amount of effort that goes into ensuring that my experience is the most culturally engrossing and invigorating is very clear, and I could not be more grateful for my fortune in winning the place on this scholarship. It’s a reminder of the value of opportunities and the importance of being thankful for them.
I can already tell how many lifelong bonds I have made with the other Scholars, relationships that I would never have made otherwise. They are amazing people with whom I have enjoyed many excursions and trips and are all so friendly and hard-working. I really could not have asked for a better experience so far.
I can only feel optimism for the future and what it holds for me. I love it here! Thank you to everyone who has helped me on my journey so far, and may it allow me to excel further!
Every year, the Wycombe Abbey International China Scholarship Programme selects approximately 10 scholars to study at its campuses in WASCZ. These scholars benefit from an international curriculum seamlessly integrated with rich experiences of Chinese culture. They engage in meaningful interactions with local students, fostering cross-cultural understanding and growth. This unique platform allows Chinese and international students to learn from one another, make shared progress, and develop a deeper global perspective.
