This term, our Kindergarten children have been enthusiastically engaged in an exciting Transportation Unit, exploring how people travel by land, sea, air and even beyond Earth.
A key highlight of the unit was our train role play running through E Block, which quickly became a hub of excitement and rich language use. Children confidently took on roles such as drivers, conductors, ticket inspectors and passengers. Through this imaginative play, they practised using English in meaningful contexts, by asking questions, giving directions and sharing ideas. This experience supported children in building vocabulary, sentence structure and social communication skills, while also encouraging cooperation and turn-taking.
Our boat, car and bus role-play areas further extended learning and language development. As children acted out journeys and destinations, they naturally used transport-related vocabulary and engaged in storytelling and problem-solving. Teachers skillfully supported play by modelling language and asking open-ended questions, helping children express themselves clearly and confidently.
The excitement continued with our airport role-play experience, which included a runway, check-in desk, security and boarding process. Children learned about the steps involved in air travel while actively using English for real-life purposes, such as checking in, announcing flights and role-playing pilots and passengers. Our K2 children proudly brought suitcases to school, having packed them for a dream holiday, making the experience even more meaningful and helping them connect classroom learning with real-world experiences. Extending learning even further, our K3 children explored space transportation, learning about rockets, astronauts, satellites and telescopes. They applied their knowledge creatively by designing and constructing their own space models, explaining their ideas and processes. This encouraged curiosity, creativity and higher-level thinking, while strengthening children’s ability to communicate their thoughts and ideas with confidence.
Overall, the Transportation Unit provided rich opportunities for children to learn through play, develop spoken English naturally, and grow in confidence within a supportive environment. By engaging in purposeful role play, children were able to express themselves, collaborate with peers, and experience the joy of learning in a fun, meaningful, and engaging way.
