The NESSIC U19 Basketball Tournament in Wuhan was an outstanding and highly rewarding experience for our U19 girls, both competitively and in terms of personal development. Travelling with a reduced squad of just six players, the team showed exceptional commitment, resilience, and unity across two demanding days of basketball.
Despite being short of numbers, the girls approached every game with a positive mindset and a strong sense of collective responsibility. From the opening match on Friday, they worked tirelessly for one another, embracing the physical and mental challenges of playing multiple games with minimal rotation. As the day progressed, there was clear evidence of learning and growth. With each game, the team demonstrated a better understanding of spacing, decision-making, and game management. This progress was rewarded with a hard-fought victory in our final match of a very challenging but enjoyable first day.
Saturday presented an even greater test. The team faced the eventual tournament winners, NCKS Wuxi, and delivered a spirited and disciplined performance, competing with intensity and belief throughout. The tournament concluded on a high note with an excellent win against BASIS Wuxi, a team with a significantly larger squad. This result highlighted the girls’ fitness, determination, and strong team ethos.
Individual performances across the weekend were outstanding. J. Zhou was deservedly named Team MVP, as voted by the other coaches, for her consistent impact, leadership, and composure under pressure. She was superbly supported by M. Lampe, who fought for every possession under the basket and set the physical tone for the team. Y. Lu and F. Wang grew in confidence as the tournament progressed, showing improved game understanding and greater willingness to take responsibility with the ball. G. Gao impressed with her confident ball-handling and increased shot attempts, while our youngest player, H. Wang, brought relentless energy–pressuring attackers, driving to the basket, and looking to score at every opportunity.
In addition to our on-court performances, the team was extremely proud to be awarded the Fair Play Award, voted for by all the participating schools. This recognition reflects the girls’ respectful attitude, sportsmanship, and positive behaviour throughout the tournament, and is a powerful endorsement of their character, teamwork, and commitment to representing the school in the right way.
Overall, this tournament was about far more than results. It showcased resilience, learning, and collective responsibility under challenging circumstances. The girls represented the school with pride, supported one another throughout the weekend, and returned from Wuhan stronger, more confident, and more connected as a team. It was a performance–and a group of young athletes–to be truly proud of.
