Our Grade 9 Design & Technology students and prospective Grade 8 D&T students recently embarked on an exciting educational journey to visit a fully automated Geely car factory. This visit was designed to give students valuable insights into the automotive industry and provide a hands-on learning experience that connects classroom concepts to real-world applications.
The day began with an engaging presentation on the evolution of automobiles, especially consumer cars. This gave students a historical perspective and a deeper understanding of how the industry has embraced innovation and technological advancements, improving consumer products over the years.
One of the visit’s highlights was a practical and fun activity. Here, students learned how to escape from a car in case of an emergency, gaining essential safety skills and understanding how design considerations ensure user safety.
After a delightful lunch at the factory canteen, which offered a glimpse of the daily life of the factory workforce, students toured the factory floor. They were fascinated by the highly advanced robotics in action and the fully automated production process, capable of producing a car every six minutes. This was a perfect example of modern manufacturing efficiency and a real eye-opener for the students.
To conclude the day, students engaged in a hands-on activity where they assembled small remote-controlled cars and raced them. This activity not only fostered creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving—essential skills for Design & Technology students-but also reinforced the connection between design, mechanics, and functionality in a tangible way.
Experiences like this industrial visit are invaluable in fostering effective learning. Outdoor learning and real-world exposure allow students to see the relevance of their classroom lessons in practical contexts. By stepping out of the traditional classroom environment, students gain a deeper appreciation of how industries operate and how design, engineering, and technology principles are applied to solve real-world problems. Such experiences also inspire students to think critically, innovate, and explore potential career paths in technology and engineering.
The Geely car factory visit was not just a field trip; it was an opportunity for our students to engage with cutting-edge technology, draw meaningful connections to their studies, and develop a greater understanding of the world around them. We are confident this experience will leave a lasting impression and motivate our students as they continue their Design & Technology journeys.
