This semester, WASCZ had the exciting opportunity to run a unique entrepreneurial project for our G6-9 students. Over the course of five Saturday mornings, these young innovators learned valuable business skills that are sure to help shape their futures as future leaders in various fields.
Building Business Skills from the Ground Up
The program was designed to introduce students to the basics of business and entrepreneurship. They learned essential concepts such as marketing, promotion, pricing, revenue and profit calculations, and more. Through a combination of hands-on activities, teamwork, and real-world application, students gained practical knowledge and experience in running a business.
Each week, students worked in teams to design and create products, starting from concept to sales. They learned how to research and target their customers, develop marketing materials such as posters, and make compelling presentations. A highlight of the project was the creation of pitch decks, where students had to present their business ideas to peers and teachers, practicing essential skills like public speaking and persuasion.
From Concept to Creation: The Big Sales Event
The grand finale took place during the final week, where each team set up a booth to showcase their finished products. The atmosphere was electric as G10-12 students and staff came out to support their younger peers by purchasing their products. Customers were provided with vouchers, which could be exchanged for the products at the booths, allowing students to practice real-world sales techniques.
In line with the hands-on approach, students produced a variety of creative and unique products, including:
Jelly Babies: Colorful stress-relief toys designed to entertain and soothe, showcasing creativity and understanding of customer needs.
Pixel Beads: Intricate, handcrafted designs using colorful beads, showcasing creativity and attention to detail.
Year of the Horse Calendars: Beautifully designed calendars celebrating Chinese culture, with a focus on branding and design aesthetics.
Pearl Art: Elegant and sophisticated art pieces made from pearls, demonstrating high-level craftsmanship.
Each product reflected the teamwork, dedication, and creativity of the students, and each team learned important lessons about cost control, marketing, and customer needs while developing their individual entrepreneurial skills. In an excitingculmination of hard work and strategic thinking, the top-performing team generated an impressive revenue of over 2,000 RMB in vouchers. This victory was a testament to their dedication, teamwork, and the knowledge they gained throughout the project.
The event was not just about selling; it was an opportunity for students to experience the entire process of running a business — from market research and product development to branding and customer engagement. The students took pride in their work, interacting confidently with customers, showcasing their products, and demonstrating their entrepreneurial skills.
