This September, WASCZ hosted its first-ever Rugby Festival on campus—and it was a triumph. Close to 130 visitors and 60 players descended on our grounds as the Changzhou Giants, our own school-based rugby team, led a developmental rugby day for the Eastern China Rugby League hosting teams from Ningbo, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Shanghai.
The day kicked off with an intensive tackling and defensive drills workshop, where new players learned the fundamentals: safe contact, proper body positioning, head safety. Rugby can look intimidating from the sidelines, but our coaches made it accessible, building confidence through hands-on instruction. After skill-building drills, players moved into friendly games where theory became practice.
As the event moved into the friendly matches, the WASCZ staff rugby team took to the pitch alongside players from different cities, sharing skills and experience. The matches gave spectators a real sense of rugby’s unique appeal: the speed and power on the pitch, the understanding and coordination between teammates, and the courage and determination players show when facing challenges.
At WASCZ, sport is not only an important part of school life, but also a way to bring our community together, fostering connections and shared experiences. This festival showcased our teachers’passion for sport beyond the classroom and helped carry forward the values at the heart of sport at WASCZ — respect, teamwork and determination — throughout our community.
