How does a bakery turn simple ingredients into successful products? What does it take to run a business efficiently while maintaining quality?
On 23 October, IGCSE and International A Level Business students from Wycombe Abbey School Changzhou visited HHYY Bakery Factory, gaining firsthand experience of how classroom knowledge is applied in the real business world.
Before the Visit:
Thinking Like Business Professionals
To prepare for the trip, students conducted secondary market research into HHYY, exploring its products, customers and market position.
Working in groups representing Human Resources, Finance, Marketing and Operations, students investigated how different departments contribute to business success and prepared questions for the visit.
Behind the Scenes:
Exploring Business Operations
During the guided factory tour, students explored the chocolate workshop, pastry production areas, bread-making facilities and cake production lines.
They observed how traditional craftsmanship, modern technology and strict quality standards work together to support efficient production. The experience helped students connect classroom theories with real business practices and appreciate the decisions involved in running a successful bakery.
A highlight of the visit was the DIY cake-making workshop, where students created and decorated their own cakes under the guidance of professional pastry chefs. The activity was both enjoyable and educational, demonstrating the skills and attention to detail required in bakery production.
Student Voices:
Learning Through Experience
S. Wang (G10)
“I learned how important each employee’s responsibilities are to the smooth operation of a business. Making my own cake for the first time was especially memorable, and the pastry chef’s demonstration helped me better understand induction training in a real workplace.”
F. Croft (G12)
“It was fascinating to see the production process and the strict hygiene procedures used to ensure food safety. Making our own cakes helped me understand how cell production, with specialised workers performing different tasks, contributes to consistent product quality. It was a fun and valuable learning experience!”
S. Cherkesova (G11)
“I really enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere and learning how the factory operates. Exploring the production areas, tasting different bakery products and creating my own cake made the visit a unique and memorable experience.”
Beyond the Visit:
Sharing Our Learning
Following the visit, students will combine their research and observations to create departmental displays showcasing what they have learned. Their work will be featured on the school’s Business display board, sharing their insights with the wider school community.
Through research, observation and hands-on experience, students gained a deeper understanding of how businesses operate and how classroom learning connects with real-world decisions. We sincerely thank HHYY (合和圆缘) for warmly welcoming our students and providing such a valuable learning opportunity.
