Not long ago, WASCZ was filled with the magic of stories as we celebrated World Book Day*. This global event is a wonderful opportunity to highlight the importance of reading, not just as a skill to be learned, but as a gateway to imagination and discovery. For our youngest learners, exposure to books is a crucial part of Early Childhood development. It enriches their vocabulary, sparks their creativity, and lays the foundation for a lifelong love of literature. When children engage with stories, they learn about the world around them, develop empathy for different characters, and begin to understand their own emotions, making days like this an essential part of their learning journey.
K1: Hands-On Creativity Through Stories
In the K1 classroom, the day began with the charming story, Ms. Honey’s Hat. The children were captivated by the tale and eager to create their own versions of Ms. Honey’s famous headwear. Inspired by the natural resources mentioned in the book, the little ones decorated their own hats using a wonderful array of materials. They glued on shells, stuck on colourful feathers, added paper strips to represent birds’ nests, and finished them off with fluffy pompoms to look like tiny bird eggs. The creative fun didn’t stop there.
In the afternoon, K1 explored the humorous story If You Give a Pig a Pancake. This led to two fantastic activities. First, the children became little chefs and made their own pancakes, carefully choosing their favourite toppings to enjoy a delicious treat. Afterwards, they channelled their energy into a craft activity, building the tree house from the story. They carefully selected the correct 2D shapes to construct their houses and made them bright and vibrant by choosing their favourite colours for each shape, demonstrating both their creativity and their understanding of geometry.
K2: A Wonderful Journey Around the World
Meanwhile, the K2 children embarked on a literary journey around the world. They started by reading a traditional Australian story, Possum Magic by Mem Fox. To connect with the story’s Australian setting, the children took part in a cooking activity to make classic ANZAC biscuits, learning about simple recipes and enjoying the sensory experience of mixing ingredients.
Their literary travels then took them to Africa with the beautiful bookHanda’s Surprise. In a fun and challenging game, the children pretended to be Handa and tried to balance baskets filled with different fruits on their heads, testing their balance and coordination just like the character in the story. It was a day full of cross-cultural exploration and fun.
K3: A World of Fantasy and Adventure
The K3 students celebrated by taking their imaginations on two very different adventures. They began with the wonderfully inventive story The Hundred Decker Bus. Inspired by the ever-expanding bus in the book, each child designed and created their very own hundred-decker bus. Using a variety of different materials, they decorated their buses exactly how they wanted, some making them colourful and vibrant, while others added special features to each deck.
Later in the day, they revisited a classic favourite, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. They took part in a range of related activities, bringing the story of the tiny caterpillar with a big appetite to life and reinforcing their understanding of the days of the week, counting, and the life cycle of a butterfly.
Finally, we would like to extend a huge and heartfelt thank you to all our parents and families. The effort put into the beautiful and imaginative costumes was truly spectacular. Seeing all the children dressed as their favourite book characters added an extra layer of excitement to the day and helped to make the stories we read feel even more real. Your support is invaluable in helping us foster a love of reading in our children. Thank you for making our World Book Day celebration such a memorable and successful event.
*Note: In the UK and beyond, World Book Day celebrations typically take place on the first Thursday of March. WASCZ follows this tradition.
